Animal Welfare in Pilibhit and Lakhimpur

An animal welfare programme named Equine Welfare is being implemented in Lakhimpur and Pilibhit districts by Shashwat Sahbhagi Sansthan with the help of Brooke India. In this programme equine ((mule, horses and donkeys)) owners are being provided services related to health and livelihood of animals.

Our teams travel to reach out to animals in the remote areas, such as brick kiln and villages where community lack access to good quality and affordable veterinary services. In addition there is a lack of basic awareness about equine welfare and good husbandry practices.

Solution of this is the engagement with communities to improve their knowledge and practices about animals’ welfare and disease intervention. It includes working with communities to enhance and strengthen knowledge, skills and practice of owners, users carers as well as service providers with appropriate linkages between them so as to build their capacity to demand and deliver quality services.

We enable and empower communities through mobilization and support them to form equine welfare groups/associations to understand collective actions. These actions strengthen a community towards the cause of equine welfare. We also help them to develop their own self-help groups so that they may be able to develop themselves.

Under the programme we provide free veterinary treatment to working horses, donkeys and mules and work closely with equine owners and local service providers by involving them in awareness programme and encourage them to adopt good equine welfare practices with the help and support of Brooke India and also promote regular training sessions.
